3 Mindful & Practical Ways of Repurposing Old Furniture

Repurposing and upcycling tips for old would-be discarded furniture

It’s always exciting to make a trip to the furniture store to get that special something that would complete the room. You make a purchase, awesome! You bring your new piece home and realize you have to make room for your new dresser. Or you’ve engaged an interior designer and your dream home unfortunately doesn’t consist of that TV cabinet anymore. We won’t be doing the planet any favors though as millions of tons of furniture are clogging up our landfills. Does this mean you have to give up getting a new dining table? Not at all.

1. Vintage Charm: Upcycling Old Furniture Into Statement Pieces

Admittedly, this choice does incur additional costs but if an old piece of furniture that is worse for wear has some sentimental value, there are services in Malaysia like those provided by syazaofalltrades that can reupholster, spruce up and pretty much rebuild it to it’s original glory or to give it a fresh new look to compliment your new home. This not only gives new life to your old furniture but also gives you a great conversation piece when you have guests over.

2. Repurpose: Use Them In Ways They Were Not Originally Intended

Dressers, cabinets, coffee tables, you name it and someone has found a way to use it differently from what it was designed for. Architectural Digest has a great list to inspire you. Doors with intricate designs can be made into coffee tables, coffee tables can be repurposed into a bench, benches can be made into low tables.. you get the idea. The point is, take a step back and evaluate what pieces you were thinking of throwing out and if they are able to be given second life as something else you perhaps needed.

3. Give Willingly, Receive Freely In This Community

One of ARK’s initatives that we are proud of is the Facebook group OLD IS GOLD we created with the aim of giving away old furniture that would have otherwise been destined for the dumps for free to those who need it. In our line of work we often come across pieces not limited to furniture that are in great condition that we know that people in our community need. Since 2014, we have been helping our local community in Penang to connect with each other to look for things and for new owners of things. If you’re part of the first or second group, do join our community!
